The palm oil industry plays a pivotal role in the global economy, with Indonesia being a major contributor. However, the quality of palm oil production faces challenges, particularly concerning the ripeness of fresh fruit bunches (FFB). The presence of under-ripe FFBs can lead to elevated levels of free fatty acids (FFA) in palm oil, impacting its quality. Addressing this issue in a swift and efficient manner is crucial for maintaining high-quality palm oil production.
Real-Time Detection through Smartphone
Guided by BINUS’ value to improve Innovation, the Palm Oil Fruit Ripeness Level Detector is developed by BINUS Faculty Member, Dr. Suharjito, Dr. Muhammad Asrol, and Dr. Ditdit Nugeraha Utama. This revolutionary application is designed to streamline the grading process in palm oil factories by providing real-time detection of FFB ripeness using a smartphone equipped with video input.
The Palm Oil Fruit Ripeness Level Detector utilizes deep-learning techniques implemented on Android-based smartphones. The system can classify FFBs into six categories: raw, under-ripe, ripe, over-ripe, empty bunches, and abnormal bunches. This level of precision ensures that only ripe FFBs are processed, guaranteeing the quality of the resulting palm oil.
Enhancing Quality and Effective Detection through Real-Time Detection
One of the key advantages of the Palm Oil Fruit Ripeness Level Detector is its ability to provide real-time detection and sorting of FFBs. By using the smartphone's camera, the application instantly analyzes the ripeness of each fruit bunch, offering an efficient solution to the longstanding challenge of timely grading in the palm oil industry. By ensuring that only ripe FFBs are processed, the application contributes to the reduction of free fatty acids in palm oil, ultimately enhancing its quality.
“I hope this product can improve the grading process in the palm oil industry and improve the quality of palm oil produced. Apart from that, it can also help the process of harvesting palm oil FFB,” expressed Mr. Suharjito, highlighting the multifaceted benefits of the Palm Oil Fruit Detector.
Recognizing the potential impact on the palm oil industry, PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) Medan has adopted this technology in harvesting palm oil FFB. The Palm Oil Fruit Ripeness Level Detector aligns seamlessly with Sustainable Development Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by introducing an advanced solution that not only improves efficiency but also reduces waste in the production process.
The Palm Oil Fruit Ripeness Level Detector stands as a testament to the power of innovation in addressing critical challenges faced by industries. Its real-time, easy, and effective detection capabilities make it an invaluable tool for palm oil factories striving to elevate the quality of their production. Embracing such technological advancements is pivotal in creating a sustainable and efficient future for the palm oil industry.
